Music is a passion pursued by many contenders. Some have used the respectable but get-quick path blazed by television shows such as “American Idol,” “America’s Got Talent” and “Sunday’s Best.” However, one rising star is taking  the old fashion route.

Jazmin Akea, born Jazmin Williams, is a young woman determined to make her mark as a singer and songwriter. The  Washington, D.C. native and current Memphis, Tenn. resident has recently released a montage for her latest single “More Than Friends.” Her other  singles include “The Only One” and “What You Like.” Her song “How Could You Hurt Me?” was produced by Recipe and written and arranged by Jazmin. The singer’s inspirations include Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige and Sade.

PentelAndPad: A young singer and a songwriter! Are you  also balancing school?

Jazmin Akea:  Attending the University Of Memphis. (I am a) senior international business major.

P: What’s going on in your music career right now? Touring locally? Working on album?

JA: I’m doing shows locally and working on features with artists in VA and TN. (I’m also) working on a mixtape.

P: When did you begin to sing and why?

JA: I began to sing and write at age 15 because I had an ongoing passion for music.

P: Where do you see yourself in five years?

JA: In five years, I see myself ghost writing for popular artists and performing internationally. I also wish to make donations to music programs across the country.

P: Anything you want people to know about you?

JA: I am working on new projects and am willing to diversify. I will be performing music in MS for upcoming shows.

Rewinding for a bit…

Musical artist Snoop Dogg is a huge fan of HBO’s hit television series “True Blood.” He mentioned the show in his song “Gangsta Luv” and has expressed his desire to make an appearance on the “Blood.”  Dogg went a step further and made a music video paying tribute to character Sookie Stackhouse played by Anna Paquin titled “Oh Sookie (True Blood).

Unforetunately, the target of Dogg’s affection does not agree with a cameo from the rapper. Last week at Audi’s Pre Golden Globes party  at L.A.’s Sunset Tower Hotel, the actress told E! “If it were an appropriate character, then why not? We have all types of people on the show…But we don’t really…put people on the show for the sake of putting people on the show.”

Awww no love. Still, funny video!

On June 10th, Joanna Hernandez, better known as Cocktail from VH1’s dating reality show “Love of Ray J,” announced on her Twitter that she and boyfriend Ray J were no longer together. She also announced the news on her personal MySpace page.

On her website, Hernandez states that she and the R&B singer turned actor are still friends. She also states that while on the recent For Love of Ray J Tour, she and her recent ex boyfriend were “acting.”

“… When I was on the show, I truly fell for Ray. I invested my time, effort, and emotions into him and wanted things to work. But the reality of reality television is that it doesn’t always work. Ray and I are no longer together. We have not been together for awhile now but we have remained friends and when we hang out we have a great time. I miss him very much and respect what decisions he has made. He is a really cool person and someone I feel connected with for sure but aside from that, I can’t say. As for the tour we just did and “acting” like we were together, it comes with the show. What people saw of us on tour was real. When we are together we have a cool chemistry. We have fun and enjoy each others company. But at the end of the day I wasn’t the right person for Ray and although it hurt me at least he was honest about the situation before it went any further. I do want to end this on a positive note, I am happy. I am having fun, living life and doing me. I have a lot of projects coming up and you will see a lot more of me for sure. “

On April 21, Ray J’s older sister and fellow R&B singer Brandy Norwood, said in an interview with  Atlanta’s radio station, The Beat, that she could had certain woman in mind for her brother.

“…I am going to get killed for saying it cause I know her, but I would love to see Ray J with Keyshia Cole. I think Keyshia Cole and Ray together, she would balance him out. She won’t take anything off of him and Ray would have to settle and step up his game.”

Could a spark of competition from the wardrobe of Brittney Spear’s “The Circus” tour  be the inspiration behind Beyonce’s revamps?

Sketches have been released of from Beyonce’s up and coming 2009 World Tour wardrobe. Though the drawings come after the “Like a Circus” singer, they have a unique flair of their own.

Apparently Beyonce saw some of French designer Thierry Mugler’s work at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute’s “Superheroes” exhibit in May, 2008. From there Mugler signed on to be the creative advisor and costume designer of the “Diva” singer’s tour.

The designer told WWD that the costumes are “‘the duality between being a woman and a warrior. Feminine. Free. Warrior. Fierce.”

On his blog, rising star Kid Cudi said that his first album, Man on the Moon: The Guardians, will be his last. He credits his decision to attacks and personal trials he has been given from the public and the media. He states, though, that he will still make collaborations with other artists, perform and work on an upcoming show with HBO.

For his fans, it will be a hard blow to take. Cudi has been featured in impressive names such as Complex Magazine, XXL, BBC News. Last year Rolling Stone honor him in their Top Five “Best Indie Hip-Hop” artists of 2008.

To the fans from his blog:

I frequently go on the online site YouTube to watch music videos from my favorite artists. However, I am realizing that it is also a wonderful place to find undiscovered or forgotten artists. This blog, is my first Ode to these singers.

In 2008, teenagers Cristina Ballestero,  Brianna Cara and Jamie Spradley formed a musical group. A mix of pop and Hip Hop, they defined themselves as a 16 year old version of Gwen Stefani, Kelis and Fergie.  The Los Angeles, Ca  natives signed onto Blackground Records, the same company that serves as a home to JoJo, Timberland, Tank and the deceased singer/actress Aaliyah. While signed, the threesome changed their group name from Willow to L.A.X. to Kali Girls, a name they chose to keep.

On March 6, 2007 the group debuted their song “Forget You” on iTunes. On March 14 of that same year, their video made its first appearance on MTV’s  Total Request Live. The group also released a song titled “Beach Girl.” Though the group seemed promising, it dismantled in 2008. Still, one of the group’s former members is still singing a strong tune.

Now 19 years old, Cristina Ballestero is showcasing her voice on the popular site YouTube. On her channel, viewers can view her singing beloved songs such as “Take A Bow” by Rhianna, “Gravity” by Sara Bareilles, and “Jesus Take the Wheel” sung by Carrie Underwood.

Ballestero’s channel has 15,026 views and is  filled with words of encouragement and support.  I have to agree with the positive responses.

Ballestero is a small girl, but she has a big and soulful sound. It is nice to hear someone faithfully hold a note! Her captivating voice is a whirlwind of pop and R&B. Every song she sings sounds like the voice of sassy but sweet young woman I have got to meet. I may be over doing it, but I love this girl’s voice.

I hope that Ballestero can succeed as a solo artist. Her talent, rich dark hair, visibly fun personality and appreciation for hard work would be a breath of fresh air.

Take advantage of her personal videos posted on YouTube.
