In 2004, Victoria Secret launched its PINK collection, a part of the VS brand that is geared towards young women. In June of 2008, Victoria’s Secret partnered with The Collegiate Licensing Company to launch the PINK Collegiate Collection. This collection showcased college names and logos on merchandise such as tote bags, sweat suits and accessories. Though this was a great honor for college students. However, scholars at Historically Black Colleges and Universities realized that their schools were not included.

According to Black Enterprise, Amelia Reid, a sophomore at Howard University, emailed Victoria’s Secret about their lack of a HBCU line. She received a discouraging email in return. As a result, Reid began a group on Facebook called “HBCU Ladies Wear Victoria’s Secret Pink Too.” By July, the group had 400 members.

The popularity of the Facebook group made its way to chief operating officer for PINK, Richard A. Dent III. Enterprise reported that he messaged Reid. “I reached out to her because she was a fan of the brand. I wanted her to know that we were not being insensitive, and we did have a plan,” said Dent.

Since then, VS has released a HBCU line. This morning in the cafe at school I saw a girl wearing one of the Hampton University sweatshirts. I am sorry guys……….but………the sweatshirt was u-g-l-y! How much does these sweatshirts cost? Over $30 each. For that amount of money the clothing should look better. Since my school has block VS online for some sexually scared reason, I cannot post a photo. I can tell you that the hoodie was white with a small pink “P”on the heart. On the back it said “GO HAMPTON” in blue letters. For $30 or more, the hoodie could have, no SHOULD have have more graphics. I am so disappointed right now.

Also, I have heard many complaints about finding the apparel. Supposedly you can only find it in the surrounding cities where the school is located. This is understandable- why have a Florida A&M University tote bag in California. Still, can someone tell me if you can purchase the HBCU clothing online?

I would check myself but, you know…..my school blocked the website.
