Music is a passion pursued by many contenders. Some have used the respectable but get-quick path blazed by television shows such as “American Idol,” “America’s Got Talent” and “Sunday’s Best.” However, one rising star is taking  the old fashion route.

Jazmin Akea, born Jazmin Williams, is a young woman determined to make her mark as a singer and songwriter. The  Washington, D.C. native and current Memphis, Tenn. resident has recently released a montage for her latest single “More Than Friends.” Her other  singles include “The Only One” and “What You Like.” Her song “How Could You Hurt Me?” was produced by Recipe and written and arranged by Jazmin. The singer’s inspirations include Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige and Sade.

PentelAndPad: A young singer and a songwriter! Are you  also balancing school?

Jazmin Akea:  Attending the University Of Memphis. (I am a) senior international business major.

P: What’s going on in your music career right now? Touring locally? Working on album?

JA: I’m doing shows locally and working on features with artists in VA and TN. (I’m also) working on a mixtape.

P: When did you begin to sing and why?

JA: I began to sing and write at age 15 because I had an ongoing passion for music.

P: Where do you see yourself in five years?

JA: In five years, I see myself ghost writing for popular artists and performing internationally. I also wish to make donations to music programs across the country.

P: Anything you want people to know about you?

JA: I am working on new projects and am willing to diversify. I will be performing music in MS for upcoming shows.

Last night the BET Awards aired at 8 p.m. ET. The night, packed with appearances and performances, also served as a platform for redemption for several stars. Here is my list:

1. Alicia Key’s Body– You may have thought that because Alicia Keys is pregnant she would stay seated in the audience at the award show. Nope. The 29 year old singer, carrying Switzz Beats’ child, performed several times at the show. During her tribute to “Life-Time Achievement Award” winner Prince, she got up from behind her piano, climbed on top, arched her back and proceeded to finish singing “Adre.” Body let everyone know that it would not be defeated by a baby bump.

2. Chris Brown– Brown plead guilty to assaulting then girlfriend  Rihanna in February 2009. Last night, Brown took the stage to tribute Michael Jackson. During “Man in the Mirror,” Brown broke down and crumpled to the floor crying. At the end of the night, he also won the “Viewer’s Choice Award.” During his acceptance speech he said that he was surprised he won and said to the audience”I let you all down before, but I won’t do it again. I promise you.”
3. T.I.- The rapper, who was released from jail after serving months, has already redeemed himself before, during and after his arrest. Still, Last night’s performance was his first major one after being released in December after serving for gun possession charges.
4. Kanye West– Last year West was heavily criticized after interrupting county singer Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech. In addition, many media outlets have reported that the usually boisterous singer has been quiet and avoidance of the spotlight. Last night, Kanye opened the award show by  emerged from a makeshift mountain.
5. El DeBarge– the singer from the 1980s group Debarge sang old and new songs from his upcoming album-the first in 16 years. He had kept a low profile after several arrests for drug possession and domestic violence.
6. Eminem- performed his new single, “Not Afraid.” The rapper recently overcame drug addiction.
Honorable mentions:

7. Janelle Monae– She never needed anyone’s approval or acceptance. The singer proved it again last night while singing Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy.” Electric.

8. Nicki Minaj- Not that she needed to be redeemed. but if she needed reassurance, she got it by winning “Female Hip-Hop Artist,” “Best New Artist”and when Young Money won “Best Group.”
