On Thursday Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker made his first public update regarding same-sex marriage in California.
Last week Judge Walker had called Proposition 8, an amendment that limited marriages to one between a man and a woman, unconstitutional. The Supreme Court of California had granted same-sex marriage licenses on June 16, 2008. However, it was halted on November 5 2008 with the passage of Prop 8.
Judge Walker has announced that he has decided to give gay marriage opponents until next Wednesday to ask the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to block same-sex weddings while it decided on appeals. If the appeals court does not act, same-sex marriages can resume Aug. 18 at 5 p.m.
